This article is like a reset for marketing teams! What does this app really do besides create brand awareness?

Allrecipes.com has a recipe spinner where you choose ingredients and the type of dish you want to make (Chicken, main dish) and it provides relevant recipes - AWESOME

The Houzz app provides interior design photo albums by city, style and room with interfaces for professionals and enthusiasts and even an 'ideabook' function to save your favs. - AWESOME

BMO lets me pay bills and process banking stuff anywhere anytime - AWESOME

AutoTrader lets me look at cars and compare prices anywhere, anytime - AWESOME

These are my favorite apps because they fill a need I didn't know I had until I found them. I never thought of a solution for having a staring contest with leftovers in my fridge, buying housewares just because they looked nice in the store, not having a live feed to my bank accounts or being able to look up the price of a car I like right in the parking lot.

These apps create positive brand experiences for me on a daily basis. I take these apps with me everywhere. As a marketer it makes me want to pay that forward to my own audience - how could I make my product/app/service indispensable?

Tombstone for deleted apps: You came all dressed up but I couldn't take you anywhere...

Thank you Delaney for pointing out that none of the real work involved with getting social to work is shiny at all. It requires difficult discussions, a new approach, and frankly an open mindset. Unfortunately, not everyone gets that.

Love your plumbing analogy, having a facebook page or 4 linkedin groups does not amount to driving business forward if you haven't mapped other elements first within the organization.

the tools are easy to use and operate in real time, but instant responses rarely mean instant results, let alone long-term results. it takes work to make social media work the way we and our bosses want it to. it There's a lot of plumbing, a lot of connecting the dots that have never been connected before, a lot of systems to connect and processes to plug into. This is all essential work; very little of it is shiny.
